What is the best way to fund Goverment?
If we did away with the majority of taxes how would the goverment be able to pay for police deptartments, fire departments and keep our roads maintained?

The only answer is a "Fair Tax". Or if you prefer a "consumption tax". Not only is it does it tax everyone, it also incourages savings. Something people in this country seem to abhor.

I have read excerpts of the Fair Tax book but haven't read it all the way through yet. I would be open to a flat tax too.

The more I look into it, the more I oppose a tax system based upon income. Thats why I shy away from a flat tax.

Yes, but at least everyone would pay the same rate of tax.

What your talking about here Rob, are local/state issues, in which people should have more control. So the question here should be, why are we taxed at a higher rate federally than the state level?
There is no easy answer to your question, because it comes down to state vs. federal.

But is that really equitable? A 15% tax rate will hurt an office worker far more than it will the CEO. Besides, a flat rate does nothing to encourage saving, or investment.
