Fine...but in the here and now, the Fed sets interest rates and credit is how money is moved for investment.

Cat, I'm just trying to clarify a point you made, "in the hear and now" I don't understand? Since 1913 and in the "now" the Fed, completely seperate from the US Government sets interest rates, i.e. discount (rate @ which banks borrow money from other banks), Fed. Funds Rate (rate banks borrow from the Fed) and prime rate which runs 3 basis points above fed. funds rate. Does that help?

The Federal Reserve Chairman serves at the behest of the President and the government.

What is your point? This is one of three national banks we have had. It is not a new concept. Our money system is a Government system and has been aorund since 1791 and was only decentralized by Andrew Jackson because of the oncoming problems with the North and South---we had two types of currency when the Confederacy was at its height. After that it took a long time to heal the wounds of that war and we went back to a central banking system like before...Government has a hand in this, it is whatever system they choose whether backed by Gold or peanuts...whether they feel strongly interest rates should be raised or lowered. Government appoints the people who do this, they work as an agent of the government and also have to take into consideration the market economy (for good or bad, that is no value judgement).

It is the same silly argument people have about the Supreme Court, they are appointed by the government and you 'get what you pay for.' It is like saying that 'God's law' or 'the Constitution' are what totally guide the Supreme Court. They are appointed by the government...bottom line---we have a government framework economic system all the way around (and gov system of laws BTW).

Here is the history, it is pretty simple.
  • Bank of the United States (1791-1811)
  • Second Bank of the United States (1816-1836) not renewed by A. Jackson
  • *Confederacy/Civil War/Reconstruction* (1836-1913)
  • Federal Reserve System (1913- )

i don't think you are reading me right.

I have never said our gov is 'clean' I am only saying it is the system it is. The 'market' does not run itself anywhere in the world. This gets us into a long discussion about semantics, ethics, societies, and 'natural' human behavior.

Can't help it, I'm a Ron Paul supporter, having said that, I believe if people were educated on how the Fed works, There'd be a lot more Ron Paul supporters:
