I personaly think that chain gangs should be used. If convicted instead of letting someone set in a cell all day, force them to pick litter up off the highways. Public service can be good for the soul.

They would be out of the penal system, they would learn a trade, they would gain employment, they could benefit from the discipline, and could have pride in themselves.

Throwing hand grenades and being good with a bayonet is nice to know but not really relevant to the Job Search. The Military, is practically useless for job training nowadays. Most people are going to go into the fucking combat fields, as opposed to the technical or trade fields and not get any kind of relevant training to the civilian job market.
The Reason we had so many God Damned Shell Shocked Veterans in Vietnam, and the reason we will most likely have a horde living on the streets when this fucking war is over.

satv365, it is clear that you have never served in the military. The only branch that is trying to fill combat slots is the Army. The people could go into the Navy or Air Force and still learn disipline which is always in demand by future employers.

Agreed Rob.
Everybody benefits from learning self-discipline, pride in one's achievements, self-confidence, how to follow orders, manners, and decent grooming.
Plus - being a soldier can be a great career for some folks.

Well, you have to survive in order to see the benefits of the GI Bill. Few people leave the Military with any relevant job skills. Most of them, if lucky use benefits to go to school.
Of which, you need to dodge Kalishnikov fire long enough to go to a College or Trade School.
I remember something my father told me. He served in the Airforce and Army, during the Vietnam War. The Military teaches you two things. How to hate Government, and how to love life.

What does prison teach you?

Maybe these soldiers are going for the higher "combat" pay?
Nevertheless, they are paid to do a job. No one is forcing these people to join the Military. The Military is not a welfare program.

So by that logic I guess you think people are forced to go on welfare

They certainly can't leave the Army if the Government starts an unjust war... Hell, people gotta sue to get out, half the time. During Vietnam, people didn't even have a choice to join up or not.
