I'll go along with legalizing marijuana, selling it in State stores ($2 per joint), if we can just shoot those growing their own, or smuggling it across the border. And if we make the illegal use and possession of other controlled substances a capital crime, like it is in some other countries.

Prohibition is and has been an abysmal failure....

But sure, lets keep doing things the same way expecting different results.
That's a real bargain.

Lets make the liberal left happy, and remove the biggest scourge the American people have ever faced, all at the same time.

ABOLISH ALL LAWS, thus making lawyers obsolete.

Of course the gun manufactures are going to reap the benefits of this, so liberal happiness will be short lived.

Did you catch this part of the article.......

"For some groups, the incarceration numbers are especially startling," the report said. "While one in 30 men between the ages of 20 and 34 is behind bars, for black males in that age group the figure is one in nine."

1 in 9 for black males. That is truly a disturbing statistic.

The below data shows the percentage of prisoners serving time for different types of crimes: (Bureau of Justice Statistics)

Violent - 52%
Property - 21%
Drug - 20%
Other - 7%

This, along with the information in the article shows me the police, and courts are at least doing part of their job. But the really scary thing about it is: Crime, in most major cities, is still out of hand, and getting worse.
With all the people that are confined to prisons and jails, there are still far to many on the street, due to plea bargains and deals cut with prosecutors.

What percentage of the prison population are baby rapers? Kill the baby rapers and you're not even going to touch the statistics. Problem is, our Old Testament-based government has a law against EVERYTHING.

What laws could we change to alleviate the jail pop?

If legalizing pot would do it, then I say go for it. I don't know why we are spending tons of money to house potheads anyway. They are typically a non-threat..........too lethargic to cause problems.

The only pot heads in prison are those growing, transporting, or selling very large quantities of the substance, and few, if any of those limit their dealings to pot. Most of those in jail, or prison, for drug related offenses are for sale and distribution, not use. Hell, even crack addicts are given three or four passes, unless they are dealers, in that case the only get two free passes.
