from the article linked above:

"But McCain echoed the concern voiced by some in the Defense Department who worry that the promise of full college tuition could entice many troops to leave the military sooner than they otherwise might at a time of war."

I can't imagine why, in a "just war," we'd have a shortage of volunteers.

According to the census bureau, there are an estimated 30 million males between the ages of 18-24, and we only need about 150,000 or so of them in Iraq/Afghanistan at a pop.

Just how does the gov't "ensure" that troops do not leave when their contract is up?

In this matter, it seems the answer is to make sure there is nothing good waiting for them when they get back home, like an education (and, as a result, a good job) in return for their service.

Instead, the gov't should be adding even greater incentives to get some more of those 30 million males between 18-24 to join up (like getting a free college education when your contract is up).

You ignore the fact that our war Vets face hostile discrimination from schools and their fellow students.
How can Congress be persuaded to grant the funds for a college education for Vets when their voters hate war Vets?
