Homelessness in America
What say you all?
Personally, I believe that there are countless people who are homeless who got there on there own, and I don't believe America owes them anything at all. Sure, there are people who became homeless for reasons out of their hands, however, what about the ones who just chose not to work? The ones who who defaulted on everything (or never tried for anything) and are now wandering our streets begging for out money?
Sometimes I yell out the window as I drive by bums and yell something like, "Get a fucking job!". Sounds rude, asshole-ish.. whatever. But, you see, every day I drive to work I see that group of bums sitting next to the Chinese Restaraunt, sometimes drinking, smoking, or pestering passerbys hoping that someone will feel bad for them. I say fuck them!
But this is just me. Maybe I'm an asshole, but I do like to know other peoples' opinions, and so I ask for yours.

"But there by the Grace of God, goes me". Fault or not, are you really in a position to judge.
BTW, Welcome to AWE.

That depends on what you mean by "position": I work my ass off, pay my taxes, and earn everything I have, so I believe I have a right to get pissed when someone who has the ability to work but refuses to do so, asks me for the money I earned. I don't do handouts.
Now, as I stated, there are people who end up in a position less desirable to most and it's not their fault -- for them I would gladly donate my time and money to aid them, but there has to be some kind of trade off. I don't help those who don't help themselves.
"Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime." (OR something like that)
And thank you! I actually enjoy being here.

Working your ass off to make a life for yourself, is in my opinion, the only way to go. However, because of the way I was raised, I do realise, in this life, we seldom know or understand what brings people to the place that they are. What may seem obvious, really may not be.
I was raised with the daydream, nice middle class house, working parents, nice yard, picket fence. The stuff fairy tales are made of, right? Or at least a pretty decent life. It isn't even close to reality.

Well, I do know many of them have mental problems of one sort or another.
With some, it is obvious...
I have a position closer to freedomlover's. I choose not to assume too much about the homeless I encounter....
This morning a homeless woman was in one of the doorways where I work when I got there at about 5:30 this morning...
It was pouring down rain...I just nodded at her and went inside.
She stayed until the rain slowed down, then left...
I was actually homeless for a period of time in my younger days. Lived in my car for awhile. Getting harrassed by the police, etc. I NEVER panhandled...
I was working, but it took awhile to get enough money for an apartment.
That was a fucking long time ago now...

I think many are homeless because of addictions or habits that they chose to do. I don't think it is wrong to help but I do think that they have to be willing to help themselves too.

Exactly! Thank you, Rob.
I don't mind helping those who want to help themselves.
Which is why I applaud former president Clinton for his Welfare reform by limiting the amount of time a person/family can live off of Welfare to two years consecutive, or five years lifetime.
The homeless, on a similar note, need to be willing to help themselves and not rely solely on the gernerosity of hard-working Americans. Our compassion is what makes us weak; America, in general, gets too involved in issues that are otherwise out of our hands.

It does get a bit annoying to be accosted by the Lefts Voting Base, for any "Spare Change"... But they've all had the best education the Left provides...
A cardboard box on the very best street-corner...What more can they wish for? Free drugs?,,,? Maybe under Hillary or Obama...
Brain dead Liberals ask for so little. Just keep them numb is all they're asking.

Being homeless in America for most families is just a paycheck away... So many Americans live paycheck to paycheck... I understand there are a lot of
homeless people that don't have a desire to better themselves, however, this is due mostly to their self esteem, which is very low... I also have encountered elderly people who can't afford and apartment or house on their Social Security check, and they become homeless... I met this one man at the train station in NYC that had been homeless for three years... He was 73 years old, and he could not afford to rent even the smallest room... I told him he should consider moving away from the big apple to a cheaper location with regards to finding an affordable apartment... However, he said he was born and raised in NYC, had no children, and his wife had passed away several years back... He told me that with his and his wife's check they were able to just make it month to month, but after she died he wasn't able to keep their apartment...

Hey Rec-this is how I view the homeless-I just do not know enough to drive by and yell at someone-pretty callous when you have no clue. Numerous studies have shown that some are there because they choose that life and a good percentage are mentally ill and many are veterans-some have addiction issues.
I think harassing in judgement is just wrong. You do not have to give a handout-but yelling at someone...really maybe it is a vet with PTSD or a schizophrenic or maybe it is a deadbeat....do you think yelling at them offers a solution?
