Why Start a Petition?
People resort to starting a petition for different reasons. It is a medium of communication that is used only when necessary. It may be overused by some, especially with the ease of making an online petition where people just start a petition for no valid reason.
When you need to voice out your concerns, there are different ways to do so. You may start by dealing with the issue yourself and let the people in charge to know of your concerns. For example, if you think you have been overcharged by your telecommunication company you can start talking to them personally and inform them of the overcharge. If, for whatever reason, they just ignore you then you can start thinking of other means of voicing out your concerns. Here, you are being oppressed of your right because you have been overcharged. If they won’t take any actions to make things right then they are already committing an injustice to you. If this is just an individual issue then starting a petition will just invite flies and no signatures but if this is an issue that involves an entire community, then starting a petition is just the proper thing to do. If one man’s voice is not enough to make them do the right thing then the voice of the majority will definitely make them fold. This is the reason why most petitions are born.
No one wants to be a victim of injustice but everyone had experienced it at least once in their life. Some would just stay silent about it and not do anything while others are strong enough and tough enough to do what’s right. Everyone will benefit from it, except the company or the government of course.
Any form of injustice should not be tolerated. If the oppressed party involves a large group of people then starting a petition is what’s needed. There’s no need to rally on the streets or to declare a strike just so you can voice out your concerns. There is a peaceful and more powerful way of doing this and that is through a powerful and successful petition.
Just make sure though that your petition must be verified by your local government and you must follow their jurisdictions. You can then send the petition to the persons it’s addressed to once you’ve reached the required number of signatures.
There are really many reasons why people start making petitions. It’s a powerful tool for the oppressed and for those who experienced injustice. The power of one can be limited but the power of people combined is so strong that it can even put a country’s President out of office. Yes, a petition is really a powerful medium that had been used by many and had been very successful with it in the end.
So basically, you must know why you want to start a petition before you even consider starting one. It’s not just something that you decide on in a heartbeat. It should be carefully thought of and other options should be considered before resorting to this form of people power.
