"Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds."

J. Robert Oppenheimer was born on April 22, 1904. While Oppenheimer often claimed the "J" stood for nothing, his birth certificate shows it to stand for Julius (his father's first name). Oppenhimer's brother, Frank, thought his parents did not want J. Robert to be known as a "junior".

Oppenheimer became officially involved in the atomic bomb project in Oct. 1941. This would come to be known as the Manhattan Engineer District Project. In Nov. 1942 he was appointed Director of what was to become the Los Alamos Laboratory, which would design and construct the atomic bomb. General Leslie Groves selected him in spite of Oppenheimer's past associations with left wing organizations. Oppenheimer was an effective organizer at Los Alamos due to his ability to quickly understand scientific ideas and for his personal charisma.

Oppenheimer welcomed the chance to support the war effort and to finally play a major role in the scientific world. And he found the project "technically sweet".

People marveled at how he seemed to understand any concept instantly. Almost everyone considered him to be their intellectual superior. He had the greatest memory anyone had ever seen. He seemed to keep all aspects of the Manhattan Project in his head, along with an impressive knowledge of the arts and literature.

Oppenheimer was also an adviser to the Target Committee, which recommended Japanese targets for the atomic bombs.

Oppenheimer headed the Scientific Panel which advised the Interim Committee to use the atomic bomb on Japan. Later he explained of the Committee, "We didn't know beans about the military situation in Japan. We didn't know whether they could be caused to surrender by other means or whether the invasion was really inevitable." (U.S. Atomic Energy Commission, "In the Matter of J. Robert Oppenheimer", pg. 34).

The Scientific Panel also recommended, for the sake of good international relations, that Russia should be told of the atomic bomb before it was used on Japan. To Oppenheimer's disappointment, this advice was not taken.

Near the end of his life, Oppenheimer expressed mixed feelings about the atomic bombings:

"I have no remorse about the making of the bomb and Trinity [the first test of an a-bomb]. That was done right. As for how we used it, I understand why it happened and appreciate with what nobility those men with whom I'd worked made their decision. But I do not have the feeling that it was done right. The ultimatum to Japan [the Potsdam Proclamation demanding Japan's surrender] was full of pious platitudes. ...our government should have acted with more foresight and clarity in telling the world and Japan what the bomb meant." (Lansing Lamont, Day of Trinity, pg. 332-333).

Nice article.Watching those bombs has always been amazing to me.Do you have any idea if some of the spectators at the time died of cancer or anything related to being near the bomb test?

Off the top of my head, I know at Trinity, the first test site, no. But at other test sites such as Bikini Atoll and Nevada there was radiation sickness. People have died from fallout at various test sites. I'm sure the US isn't the only country responsible for this, either. Bikini is still monitored to this day.

And by the way, Oppenheimer's quote above, "Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds" isn't a misquote. That's exactly how he said it, referring to the Bhagavad Gita.

How can man carry on with something that was made out of anger and loss it was made to be an utter destroyer, God help us! J.Robert.Oppenheimer I am affraid has got a lot to answer to. At the end of the day he new what he designed was an utter destroyer that is why he said that quote "now I am become death". I am afraid it was a warning to us all.
At the end of the day every country has loved and lost through war, and I am also afraid every country has got to look after there own but not by nuclear weapons it is a destroyer of all living thing's as my other saying goe's who comes first the world or people the answer the world because if we did not have no world there would not be no people. So there for why would man make something to destroy all life.Answer hate, loss, confusion and utter disgust. We are supposed to look after this world not destroy it along with all humanity men make things so hard and so confusing that they make things worse for us and are planet it is time to lay the past to rest. And rewind the clock to bring back what was right about the past.
Are children at the end of the day are a gift from god they learn by the people around them and what they see.
I do not think I need to say any more.
I think I will add one more thing we are at a cross road on this planet and what we do now will reflect big in are future even if it is good or bad.I think are planet and are life is worth laying down the ammo of destruction dont you? god bless.x.x. to all.

I agree with you 100% woodlandspring, but for better or for worse nuclear weapons are a reality. I am really indifferent to the subject, and I don't believe WMDs serve a purpose except that it may keep civilization in check. I don't blame Oppenheimer personally because another physicist could have easily stepped in to replace him and he was doing his job just as Neil Armstrong was doing his when he first stepped on the moon. Someone could have stood in for him, and I would like to think that he could sleep at night even after what he helped create, unlike Alfred Noble, who started using nitroglycerin commercially and invented dynamite...he said that because of what he created his guilt complex kept him up at night.

Don't forget The Soviet Union and Germany were working on WMDs as well at the time. The Soviets succeeded while Germany's efforts were halted.

I would like to believe that we will never use them again, that we have learned our lesson, but I am on the fence about this somewhat. I really agree with you when you say that we are at a crossroads...we certainly are.

I would hope that the human race and the powers that be have enough common sense not to let MAD happen. A few years ago I heard a statistic say that we have enough nuclear weapons to destroy the world 25,000 times over. I don't know how true that is.

In the event that it does happen, I think on this planet there is a probability, although not a very high one that humanity will survive somewhere.

I also agree with you a hundred percent angry gamer, if it was not for him! it would of been some one else this is not about blame it's about putting things back on course again to try and stop critical damage. As i said if something was made out of upset and loss, to be an utter destroyer why have we taken it to are future.I am afraid most country's are using them in every day life to try and stop people seeing what they are actually doing. Most of the time people get killed from miles away and the people who shoot the rockets do not even see what they are doing or causing. Nuclear weapons are taking over but killing are planet and more life in the process. And as I said in my blog what if this is the cause of global warming, What if this is the cause of killing of are sea life. Take for example sub's they have radiation on board they are not likely to put there crew at risk are they so where doe's the radiation go, if you get my drift? I might be wrong but i do not think I am, let me no your views please.Woodlandspring
