How do you prevent abortions?
First, come to grips with the fact that you will never stop them all. Got it? You can't do it, so for the most rabid of you anti-abortionists, you can start with that very simple fact.
For the rest...
I've heard it said time and again, that it starts with the family. Open communication, education, proper supervision, guidance, limits and punishments. Yup, that all sounds good, but what about all those that don't come from those types of families. I see it as often (sometimes more) in wealthy families as I do in poor and middle class ones. Then what?
Here is the advice I always offer before bringing down the cold hard hammer of fact...
It may indeed start with the family, but it does not end there. It's a corny saying, but it takes a village. It literally astounds me that folks are willing to spend all day protesting at abortion clinics, pay big bucks for signs and pamphlets, office space to coordinate "activities", lobby congress, and on and on, yet not one of these people would agree to nor are generally willing to spend that time and those resources in the community reaching out to the families in crisis.
How many social evils besides abortion could be prevented if we all acted like neighbors and helped each other out? Talk about killing two, three four birds with one stone. You can't eradicate social ills, but we could sure as hell knock them way back if we were a bit more involved in our communities.
But instead, the critics (of any issue) prefer to preach from their computer chair, chastise folks in difficult and painful periods in life, yell insults from the curb, refuse to help those outside of their beliefs (political, religious or otherwise).
Put away the picket signs and hostilities, come to grips with the fact that it's too late to help some and concentrate on improving your community resources with an aim to getting to these at risk lives BEFORE the really difficult choices need to be made.
Or you can keep living your life by going from your air conditioned house, to your air conditioned car, to your air conditioned cubical and back. God forbid we should actually take a step outside of those comfortable bubbles to improve our collective lot.
Oh, and if you are one of those "special" people that still believes the government is going to solve the question... get real. As long as you look to them for a solution, they will continue to use the issue to get your vote... both sides. Get it? Neither side of the political aisle wants to see this thing settled. EVERY SINGLE election cycle, they have a guaranteed issue to bring people to the polls.
Nahhhh, not YOUR elected public servant, ... NEVERRRrrrrr
But no one ever wants to hear that. Because you can't point a finger at anyone else if it becomes the reponsibility of all of us. Pointing fingers and expecting others to solve it, is far easier to do than to actually get off your ass and help.
