Abstinence programs are a complete waste of time and resources. The only way that abstinence works is by individual self-control and choosing. If one wants to wait, more power to them. However, most of us don’t live in the 1950s. This ancient idea of “true love will wait” should not be applied to today’s way of life or mean that sex is bad, wrong or dirty if one is not married. Love can exist without marriage and sex is a natural and beautiful way of expressing that love. Even if it’s not love, people should be allowed to make their own decisions as to their sexual relationships. Since the idea and the institution of marriage is changing, so too should the idea of sex.
If you’re going to have programs, they need to be effective, which means keeping up with the times. In today’s society, teens are experimenting with sex more and more. Instead of telling teens what they shouldn’t do (which inevitably means they will), tell them how to protect themselves against STD’s, pregnancies, etc. Our society is very poor at teaching consequences for one’s actions and that needs to change.
People also need to stop making the bedroom a political issue. Whether its sex, abortion, or gay marriage, these are all personal issues and should not be dictated as to right or wrong, especially by those not directly involved in the situation. To each, their own. Prior to debating such issues, one should ask him or herself whether they want a complete stranger telling them what they should and should not do in the bedroom.

It's not a political issue. It is a personal issue and what is acceptable for our family. I'm sorry, but I would rather not my daughter be nicknamed "the grand canyon".

You can't blame men for their sexual desires.
Women need to be more accommodating and understanding.

family only goes so far.
kids disobey their parents all the time. especially when it comes to sex.
I think its better to teach our daughters to ignore rumors and name calling. and that they can have just as much sex as the boys if they do choose to.

Fortunately, my kids choose their friends wisely and they're too busy with sports and activites to be involved with drug, alcohol, or sex.

I wouldn't belittle your knowlege of your children, but just because they aren't involved with drugs, alcohol, and sex, doesn't mean that they aren't thinking about drugs, alcohol, and sex.

They wouldn't be normal individuals then, would they? Does my 12 year old think about sex, probably, but not my 10 year old. Do they think about drugs and alcohol, no, they've sat through too many assemblies. The lovely pictures they show will deter anyone with half a brain, ever see a picture of a meth mouth? Yuck.

And yet.....something that adults are trying so hard to get you to hate must be INCREDIBLY FUN!

Oh, and the "I'm invincible; it wouldn't make me into a skanky crack whore!" mentality of teens also plays a part in it.

I don't want my kids to travel down the same road I did.
