Yes, I think it is really life before that, as sperm and as an egg. How could life evolve from something that is not alive to begin with? When a sperm penetrates an egg it is bonding two life forms.
Why can't a human cell be considered life also? How else could we be cloned if they were not alive to begin with? The scientists don't create life, they just manipulate it.
