Default letter to editor due to local article.

This is the link to the original article.

Here is my letter to the editor:

Quote:
In the January 21st article “Activists keep eyes on Roe versus Wade” Pastor Steve Gaines is quoted as to say, “…if it comes to and outright vote, abortion would not be legal.” He also later adds, “…but there’s a problem with left leaning judges.”

First of all, Gaines needs to get his polling straight; I truly think he only takes a vote on Sunday at Bellevue Baptist Church. It is shown over and over a majority of Americans want Roe v Wade to stay in place but do not agree with third trimester abortions and partial birth abortions (even Roe v. Wade makes exceptions in the third trimester). A majority of Americans agree with a woman’s right to choose.

Second, Gaines comment about ‘left leaning judges’ is another usage of this made up, faux battle axe politically active people on the right enjoy wielding. Judicial review was established with the Marbury vs. Madison decision and court rulings have cut both ‘left and right’ since 1803. If Gaines comment held water then the current ‘leaning’ of our Supreme Court is actually ‘right leaning activist judges’ who have interdicted with rulings totally against American free market principles. Gaines should do some reading on our Supreme Court and how they are working against his own best interest. Who knows, they just might rule against the tax exempt status of the many ‘enterprises’ Gaines’ Bellevue church is involved with.

Lastly, the Roe v Wade majority opinion was authored by Harry Blackmun in 1973. Justice Blackmun was actually quite conservative and always voted no to even hear gay rights court briefs among other ‘morality and values’ issues that came before the court. When Roe v Wade was brought before the court in 1971 he argued very strongly this was a woman’s right to choose, there is vagueness in state statutes that cover abortion, and not having the ruling also places doctors in a very precarious position. This is NOT a left leaning judge at all but recognized a basic human rights and legal health care issue when he saw it. Gaines should read the actual court brief and read about the early 1970s SC that made the ruling on Roe v. Wade.

"I think most of us in the pro-choice movement have personally known women who have gone through this and I do not know a single woman who has done this in a cavalier manner," Cornish said. "Another consideration is that laws that would prohibit abortion discriminate against the poor and those without insurance. I'd like to see the Supreme Court stay out of our personal lives."

IF they want the Supreme Court to stay out of their lives then they also also should stay out of the gov't pocket book for federally funded abortions.

In a perfect world everyone would be responsible for their actions, just not the rich and middle class.

In a perfect world there would not be any classes. I don't know where you live, but here in the real world plenty of rich and middle class women have abortions, is that the 'responsibility for their actions' you speak of?
