This really bothers me... Me and Newt, and our ilk... Gosh, you assume too much.
I am a conservationalist, I conserve so much that it would your head spin... I use water barrels for irrigation, only use native plants in my yard - and those that require little water, no electricity (lighting) during daylight hours, DRive as little as possible, use energy efficient appliances and light buls, take my own tupperware to restaurants, never eat at places that use styrofaom, never drink water from a bottle, and I recycle. I can't conserve any more than I already do.... Do you? I see you bitching about something, but are you part of the problem, or part of the solution?

We use over 20 million barrels per day
1 billion barrels would provide for all of our needs for less than 50 days.
Current reserve estimates are 21 Billion barrels.
What's the plan for three years down the road?
(I realize we couldn't and wouldn't produce it fast enough to provide for all of our needs...just trying to present a bit of perspective).

So, when you are out of bread at your house, do you just go with out? Is going to the store for more bread, not part of your solution? Or do you import it in? Do you pay S&H charges? Or do you you go just down the road and buy more bread, because it's economically feasible? Or perhaps you send someone that hates you to get it? All the while hoping they don't keep your change?
Really?
