The Abrahamic religions claim that the Soul, or Spirit, is housed within the human body, that when we die, that spirit leaves the pysical body and travels "up" to their heaven. Or "down" depending on how well indoctrinated that person was.
In older European religions, the spirit dwells in other planes, and is connected to the physical body by the proverbial "silver cord".
In yet other older traditions, the physical self is but a "dream" that the higher, spiritual self is having.

As a Non-Abrahamic Theist, a Celtic Reconstructionist to be precise, I see the human mind as merely a physical part of the human body, not only responsible for the upkeep and operations of our bodies, but also connected to the spiritual self through that silver cord, with the subconious acting as an intermediary, a form of "resistor or fuse" if you will.
