The same vet, or anyone else there, will tell you they have never seen a more loved or cared for dog as Sam in the lives. Yell out if you want her email.
Sam was okay when we went to bed that night. At 4AM I sat bolt upright in bed knowing something was wrong. When I went into his room he had obviously just died seconds before. His tongue and other parts were still warm, as was the urine he was lying in on his couch.
I kissed and cuddled him until rigor mortis set in and delayed burying him until 5 PM that night so Lochie could grieve him and know he was gone.
Two nights later it rained overnight and I am that crazy I was up at 2 AM, in the rain, putting sheets of corrugated iron over his grave (4' 6'' deep!) so he wouldn't get wet.
I have never loved anyone or anything so much in my life.

You and I have the same thoughts about our Pets...I had to putdown my Tasha Bell 3 1/2 weeks ago. She was 14 years old, and could no longer "Run with the Big Dawgs". Arthritis had set in quickly in her hind quarters.
She went to sleep in my arms.
Peace unto thee.
