The current Pres. Bush apologized
because he perhaps finally understands that rounding up the usual suspects - them "foreign-looking young men" is precisely the wrong thing to do if you plan to try to enlist translators, local informants, spies, language instructors, intercept operators, etc. from that same popuation. AG Ashcroft stepped wrong on that one. While welcome, the effort to correct this is much too late.
The best this Pres. Bush can do is stop roiling the waters & quietly leave the stage to reality-based diplomats & professional soldiers & intelligence agents. VP Cheney - remember him? He was going to steep himself in the "War on Terror" & learn all the ways, learn the tradecraft, go to the "Dark Side". The Veep can pack up his Lil Orphan Annie Magic decoder ring, his stovepiped "intelligence", the yellowcake from Niger, the Rumsfeldt, the Perle, D. Feith, the lot of chickenhawks, the full Vietnam, the waterboarding, the torture, [i]Gitmo/I], "extraordinary renditions", the cowed (or suborned, or rented!) "mass media". & don't forget Ahmed Chalabi, still trying to wheel & deal himself a winning hand on the ground in Iraq. We'll toss him in as the booby prize.
Get that hook ready!
