[quote=George O Well;425181]Rightwingers can surely dream up some pretty darn goofy campaign issues, can't they? I wasn't there, but I'd bet "appeasement" was an issue in Richmond before the Civil War. "We can't appease the Yanks, those godless liberals will take away our niggers."
But, before we forget, Chamberlain was a member of the British Conservative Party, and it was the Republicans in the U.S. House and Senate who fought Roosevelt tooth and nail about getting us into WWII. Remember WWII? Remember when there was a REAL Hitler.
I think Republicans (Bush and McCain) ought to drop the 'appeasement' issue. They are looking like village idiots.[/QUOTE

Well said, "GeorgeO", and at risk of being disrespectful, "they ARE the village idiots." [Its just that they are counting on the rest of us to be even more stupid & more idiotic then they are.]
I think Appease = to give something away in the "hopes" the aggressor will not take from you too. Talking & negiotating is NOT appeasement: of course all knowledgable people know that, but it is bothersome when a President & his heir apparent attempts to confuse the public into thinking that discussions & talking with those we oppose is not American.
Imagine what would have happened on several occasions during the Cold War if the sitting President had not talked & discussed the issues with the Soviets: Kennedy's back-door discussions with Kruschev saved the world from nuclear confrontation & are well documented during that period. Reagan's talks with the soviets eventually led to the fall of the Soviet Union with out nuclear devistation: and Nixon's discussions with China & Vietnam are were also historical steps to avoid conflict.
Both Bush & McCain should be dennounced for their dishonest trickery in such an important matter: to hell with steroids & base-ball, here is a real issue for the Congress to address.
(Chris Matthews on MSNBC last Friday, exposed a Conservative Republican Radio Talk-show fool [Kevin James] when Chris ask him, "well tell me what Chamberlin did to appease Hitler." Mr. James could not answer the question, and eventually had to admit "he did not know",) This loud mouth was talking but did not know what he was talking about: I suspect a lot of that happens with these Radio Talk Show blunder-bust. ...pjwky
