Well, part of the advantage of being surrounded by scrub, desert and mountains, is that it is so hard for others to attack you. Until the 19th century, the invaders generally were nomads, who formed an elite, but really didn't colonize the territory. Sort of like the Normans in England, but without anything that could be considered more civilized (language for instance).
