Well considering that that the aim of the US imperialists in invading both these countries was to ensure their own hegemony in the middle east then these occupations have not been successful. You don't judge success on numbers killed (after all Vietnam had much less US casualties but they lost) but by their goals and if or not these have been achieved.
Saddam and the Taliban were the two greatest enemies of Iran and by removing them the imperialists have inadvertently strengthened the Iranian regime and made it into a regional superpower. Not really a successful achievement of their goals now is it?
