I have a theory that there are only three kinds of homophobes: The religious ones, those who are just squicked out, and those who follow the latest fad.
The religious homophobes seem to think that a dusty, old book is a valid reason to condemn other people, and even hurt them. Despite their gods being all-loving and omnipotent, they seem to hate homosexuals, and yet not possess the power to do anything about them. Funny that. In any case, these are probably the most dangerous, as they not only hate homosexuals, but are capable of rationalizing their condemnation.
The people who are just squicked out are generally straight people. A common example is the man who won't tolerate gay men, but gladly jerks off to a video of two girls making out. Such hypocrisy isn't truly homophobia. Most likely, they don't really mind the fact that men might have sex with each other, but every time they think about it, they can't help but imagine the same happening to themselves, which squicks them out. These aren't very dangerous, as most seem to consider homosexuals human beings, at least, and aren't necessarily actively speaking out against homosexuals.
Finally, homophobia happens to be the latest fad. These are probably the same kinds of people who buy their clothes according to what celebrities wear. Looking back through human history, there has always been something for the majority to discriminate against. You wanna be in the club, you gotta hate them gays. Of course, sometimes it's ok for girls to experiment, but only because the guys think it's hot. Actually being gay is still uncool. These aren't on par with religious homophobes, but they're still dangerous, as they might have a bit of a superiority complex, with the whole "everyone does it so it's ok" thing.
At least, that's my theory.
