And why, oh why, can't anyone find a single economist who says it will benefit the country in any significant way? Because it won't. It's pandering--a simplistic, temporary band-aid so that people can feel like "something" is being done.

Speculators, in addition to those we buy our oil from are driving up the prices.
My point, end the taxes, people are taxed enough. If you choose to keep paying high taxes, while large oil companies make fuckin' bank - go ahead.
And I could give a shit if it's political pandering - it puts more money back in the pockets of AMericans - where it belongs. If the government didn't tax people so damn much through out the year, a stimulus package wouldn't even be neccessary.
As far as temp. aid, ya God forbid we should have any of that.
And if people had listened to economists 6 years ago, we'd still be in the same boat. Economists don't run the country, the people do. And it's quite simple, if people have more money in their pocket, they will spend it. Thus, boosting the economy.
And just a note, if you think an 18 cent tax break on oil is gonna hurt this country, and there will be no money to draw from to replace the gas tax - how in the hell do you think this Obama fool will ever make national health care work???? Talk about political pandering!!!!!!!
