It's a physical condition, a birth defect if you will. The sex of the brain, which happens to be the most important sex characteristic, does not match the sex of the body. It happens due to stress-related hormonal changes in the mother. Children are often aware of this to some degree at very young age. Transsexuals often show subtle, but still abnormally prevalent physical traits of the other sex even before any kind of treatment.
Is that clear enough, or is it still just some mental illness caused by abuse?
