I had to laugh out loud when I read this letter to the editor in yesterday's paper:

Global warming could be civilization's undoing : Letters : Anderson Independent-Mail

Global warming could be civilization's undoing

Global warming is a fact. A warming climate is melting the world’s glaciers and polar ice, but the glacier scientists did not believe it would happen this fast.

The national news outlets have reported that in Greenland, the glaciers are moving faster than ever. The process is irreversible. Greenland alone could push up the sea level by three feet by the next century. Most glaciers in the Alps could be gone by 2100. Over the past 30 years, the Arctic Sea ice has thinned by 40 percent.

In Antarctica, where 90 percent of the world’s ice is, satellite photos show that sections of ice as big as Rhode Island are moving. Some months, ships can pass through the Arctic Ocean without an icebreaker. The temperature of the oceans is up one to two degrees.

By 2100, there will be a billion people in the United States and New Orleans and Miami Beach will be under water. People all over the world will have to relocate and most countries will not be able to take any more immigrants. Most scientists agree that as the world warms, the tornadoes, hurricanes and floods will become more severe. People in the Marshall Islands are trying to save their roads and homes from high tides now.

All of this is caused by man and it could be the end of civilization, as we know it. Nothing is forever on this earth.
