I "get" motor sports, (two words) and all you have to do to "get it" as well is admit to yourself that the "race" has less to do with it, then the vicarious image projection fans feed off of from the drivers.
It is classic adult non sexual ( in most cases anyway) "man crush" syndrome
Check out books by Mary Alice Waters or Rita Mea Brown, they both discuss the psychology of sports at length.
The corporate sponsorship is in my humble opinion, pathetic, but possibly necessary, and I am spot on when it comes to the origin of NASCAR.
Open wheel is a completely different thing, and we could discuss the obvious overt misogynist attitude by the fellow drives of Danika Patrick, (Who as it happens, I have known personally for 12 years) and their attempts to harm her career, but that is another discussion
As for my colorful description of the fan base:
Come on dude...am I THAT far off?

Yes you really are off. Actually the fan base tends to be homophobic retards.
