NCLB has such low standards, that if children are not learning these basic things in school, they aren't "learning" anything else.
Now yes, NCLB has flaws in it, but the simple fact is that education in this country is horrible, a large minority of students are not graduating from high school, and many of those who do are functionally illiterate. The Status Quo failed, so something new has to be tried. Rather than bitch about NCLB, critics need to focus on ways of improving it, or at least present a thought out alternative.
