"As the wife of a GOP presidential contender, Cindy McCain can expect to spend a lot of long days on the campaign trail. But that pales in comparison to what she's already endured.
In an interview in the July edition of Harper's Bazaar magazine, McCain, 53, discusses how she coped with several miscarriages, recovered from a minor stroke and overcame a prescription drug addiction.
The wife of Arizona Sen. John McCain said
she became addicted to painkillers after having back surgery in 1989.
"That was the darkest period of my life," said Cindy McCain, who added that she never took another pill after admitting her problem to her mother."
