I think its genetic... or there is a genetic part to it.
I watched the story of this one woman. she had 4 kids.
the first is very autistic (a male)
then she had a healthy daughter
then she had a son who was pronounced healhy- but later identified as having a mild form of autism (next to his brother he seems healthy and they assume he could have been acting out a bit. thus it wasn't until he was over age 10 and his mom read a book about a different from of autism that she saw the signs)
and...
while the show was filmed she had another son. she started seeing a doctor who is trying to find autism markers in very young kids. like all the other kids in this study, the baby showed some markers on one visit (every 6 months) but the amount of markers changed by the next visit. the only difference is he had 2 brothers with autism disorders.
