One does not "protect" a hypothesis. Proper scientific reasoning calls for one to do everything in ones power to unseat or disprove that hypothesis. If it withstands that, you can be reasonably sure that you have the right idea. Protecting a hypothesis is a career ender. Kind of like fixing intel to fit the policy.
