Default Why Should Healthcare Be Non-profit?

Recognizing the US health-care system leaves a lot to be desired, why couldn't it be revamped to still provide the profits that everyone hopes to make and provide adequate coverage for all Americans?
The 2 BASIC needs in life are food and shelter. No one is calling for free food for all or the elimination of profits in the food business.
Same with shelter. The recent sub-prime crisis aside, most people accept the fact they won't get their house for free. They don't mind the brokers, RE agents, contractors, etc. making money.
Why should healthcare be any different? After all, free medical care will do very little for someone without food or shelter.
Not a defense of the current system, just wondering about the logic.
